The European Accessibility Act (EEA) is a landmark directive introduced by the European Union to ensure that key digital products and services are accessible to all users, including people with disabilities. Enacted in 2019 and coming into force in full by June 28, 2025, the EEA aims to harmonize accessibility standards across EU member states, reduce market fragmentation, and enhance the inclusion of people with disabilities in the digital economy.
The EEA applies to a wide range of services and products, including e-commerce platforms, banking services, e-books, ticketing systems, ATMs, smartphones, and public websites and mobile apps. It requires that these services meet specific accessibility criteria to be usable by people with visual, auditory, cognitive, and motor impairments.
